Quitting stable jobs in search of post-pandemic adventure.
YOLO = You Only Live Once — a YOLOer = employee considering “change”
21 April, 2021 NYT – …many [YOLOers] seem in a deep, generational disillusionment, and a feeling that the economy is changing in ways that reward the crazy and punish the cautious.
Several people in their late 20s and early 30s — mostly those who went to good schools, work in high-prestige industries — told me that the pandemic had destroyed their faith in the traditional white-collar career path. They had watched their independent-minded peers getting rich by joining start-ups…. Meanwhile, their bosses were drowning them in mundane work, or trying to automate their jobs, and were generally failing to support them during one of the hardest years of their lives.
“The past year has been telling for how companies really value their work forces,” said Latesha Byrd, a career coach in Charlotte, N.C. “It has become challenging to continue to work for companies who operate business as usual, without taking into account how our lives have changed overnight.”…
…“Diversity, equity and inclusion are extremely important now,” she said. “Employees want to know, ‘Is this company going to support me?’”
There is something that is changing the way companies do business called ESG. Environment, Social, Governance…. These YOLOers are sensitive to the “social” part and if you are a YOLOer and decide to look for a new job/career, you can also consider how important the Environment is to YOU!

Consider the Color of your Future as Green!
What is “Green Economy” anyway?
You might define a “green economy” as one that provides prosperity for all, within one planet’s limit. That’s the short version. But it’s a complex topic! Let’s go into a little more detail.
Crucially, a green economy is not just about protecting the environment or tackling climate change. It’s also about providing well-being and prosperity for people – all people. In fact, the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) has published a set of Green Economy Principles, Priorities and Pathways that can guide businesses and governments toward re-wiring our economies to ensure that everyone can live well within our ecological limits.
The 5 Principles are:
- Wellbeing: The economy enables all people to create and enjoy prosperity;
- Justice: The economy promotes equity within and between generations;
- Planetary Boundaries: The economy safeguards, restores and invests in nature;
- Efficiency & Sufficiency: The economy is geared to support sustainable consumption and production;
- Good Governance: The economy is guided by integrated, accountable and resilient institutions.
Building a green economy requires deep-rooted reform – but it is already happening. Our Green Economy Tracker is an interactive online tool that charts the policies and programmes that are already driving change around the world. And there’s lots more information on the green economy at the GEC website – including our “State of the World” research report, the Green Economy 2020 Global Barometer, which describes how global markets are adapting for a low-carbon, climate safe future.
The African Forum on Green Economy was a three month online exchange, held May – July 2020, which brought together leading experts to explore how African countries are pioneering the transition to greener, fairer economies.
So How Do you decide that it is time for YOU to seek a new job or new career? Here are some suggestions.
10 Warning Signs You Need a New Job

How To Change Careers When You Have
No Idea What You’re Doing
It was one of the most difficult periods of my life.
On the surface, I had a good job in a well-known company. I’d done what was expected of me post-university. I’d been promoted several times. I had a mortgage, I was travelling with work and had great prospects ahead of me.
Inside though, I was deeply unfulfilled. I wasn’t enjoying my work, I felt like I wasn’t using my full potential, and I longed to wake up feeling like my work was making a difference – to someone or something.
Yet, I didn’t have a clue what else I could do.
Eventually, as you’ll read below, I came out the other side. But it wasn’t an easy journey.
These are the lessons I learnt along the way.
What you need to know:
1. It’s you that wants to make a change, but it’s also you that’s your biggest obstacle
2. You can’t figure it out by figuring it out
3. You won’t find a job by looking for one
What you need to do:………………….and onward………….

2. People you want to work with
3. The company puts its people, not its bottom line, first
4. It fits your personality
5. You’re excited about the work
6. The company will help you grow professionally
7. Both up or sideways mobility is promoted
8. The environment is uplifting
9. They promote work/life balance
What to Know Before Making a Career Change at 40
What can you do? You may be worried that it’s too late to make a career change. Although it may sound trite, it’s never too late. That doesn’t mean your transition will be simple or that you can make it without a great deal of effort. Change is hard, even if you prepare well for it.
The truth is, though, that going to work every day to do something you don’t enjoy, or that isn’t gratifying, is far more difficult. Weighing some of the positives and negatives of making a career change at 40 can help you get started with your decision-making process.

‘Green’ jobs in Biden’s infrastructure bill:
What they could pay and how to be eligible
A priority of President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure and climate change bill, called “The American Jobs Plan,” is to “tackle climate change with American jobs and American ingenuity,” Biden said when he promoted his plan in Pittsburgh on March 31.
For instance, it includes $174 billion in spending to “win” the electric vehicle market globally. It also proposes spending $100 billion to “reenergize America’s power infrastructure,” which includes money to plug old oil and gas wells, to clean up abandoned mines and to build 10 facilities to demonstrate “carbon capture retrofits for large steel, cement, and chemical production facilities.”…
…while some jobs, like installing wind farms, are clearly “green” jobs, some jobs created by the Jobs Act, which are technically considered “infrastructure” jobs, will also benefit climate change goals — the Venn diagram of “green” jobs and “infrastructure” jobs overlaps.
