Too much Methane! NOW! GHG!

You want to know why Australia has been burning up?
this is how I put 2+2 together…….

In this post:
NATURAL GAS = METHANE
I believe I have made a big mistake.
MAKE SURE THE STUFF DOES NOT LEAK!
How did the Permafrost Heat up so much?
Where has this extra methane heat come from?
no doubt, still leaking……..
The USA is not the only country that continues to ignore it

Above Aminmation: A reduction in global burned area in the 2000s had an unexpectedly large impact on methane emissions. (It looks like it is more complicated than that!) JANUARY 2, 2018 Find the full animation here. Credit: NASA/GSFC/SVS.** What’s Important: increase in methane

NATURAL GAS = METHANE

Leaking natural gas is invisible to the human eye and is a serious environmental concern. Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is  86 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years. Fugitive emissions also pose a safety concern: natural gas mixed with air can be explosive. To top it off, hazardous and carcinogenic substances are often emitted alongside methane.
At room temperature, methane is a colorless, odorless gas.  The familiar smell of natural gas, as used in homes, is achieved by the addition of an odorant, usually of blends containing tert-butylthiol, as a safety measure.

>>>I believe I have made a big mistake.
>>> I bring it to the attention of those who need to know.

I published 3 posts on the subject of Waste to Fuel/Energy.
I was so excited that there are now methods to turn un-recyclable rubbish into Fuel.
Humans can now take their landfills and turn them into the fuel they need to move around.
Anaerobic Digestion In Full Swing – #1 Waste To Energy?
CNG, LNG, RNG Fuelling Stations – #2 Waste To Energy
#3 Municipal Solid Waste – MSW To BioFuel? Yes!

But when I finished all these, I kept thinking …more pipe lines? more Methane. Natural Gas is Methane=86 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years. How much do those pipelines leak? What will happen with more pipelines, moving the methane around …filling car tanks at RNG gas stations…. shipping liquid methane around the world? Arctic Methane levels are rising, Why?

In fact, it was my growing concern that provoked me to put together another post: Slow Down ?? Yes – No, Changes Are Urgent , BUT…..

This issue warrants more immediate study and solution, before we can really say we are on the right track about Waste to Fuel.

There are many happy people, especially in the USA who believe they have found lucrative ways to join the sustainable movement by building the LIQUID NATURAL GAS station Grid across the USA for what they consider to be greener fuel!
I WAS FOOLED! I did not search far enough!
They may be kidding themselves!
It is not that their idea does not make sense, but what is happening in our world – sets up a very serious requirement before going ahead….

MAKE SURE THE STUFF DOES NOT LEAK!

In September 2008, they were already calling it a Time Bomb.

In July 2018, Australia – Dr. Andrew Glikson Earth and paleo climate science, Australian National University, Canberra, A.C.T., published:
The methane time bomb! (Probably even earlier, but in this research)
Global warming, driving a mean rise of 3 to 8 °C in the Arctic early during 2015- 2018, is leading toward the release of billions of tons of methane into the atmosphere, from permafrost, lakes, shallow seas and sediments. This release threatens to melt large parts of the polar ice caps, leading to meters or to tens of meters of “sea level rise”. … Compounding this effect is extensive drilling for coal seam gas, perforating the crust in several parts of the world and releasing commercial and fugitive emissions of methane into the atmosphere.

>>>How did the Permafrost Heat up so much? Is there more heat trapping Methane in the atmosphere than thought?

March 2018
Thawing permafrost produces more methane than expected

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas that is roughly 30 times more harmful to the climate (trapping heat) than carbon dioxide (CO2). Both gases are produced in thawing permafrost as dead animal and plant remains are decomposed. However, methane is only formed if no oxygen is available. Until now, it was assumed that larger amounts of greenhouse gases are formed when the ground was dry and well aerated—when oxygen was available. Christian Knoblauch and his colleagues have now demonstrated that water-saturated permafrost soils without oxygen can be twice as harmful to the climate as dry soils—which means the role of methane has been greatly underestimated.

According to the scientists: The permafrost soils of Northern Europe, Northern Asia and North America could produce up to 1 gigaton of methane and 37 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2100. (A gigaton is one billion metric tons. let’s say 500 billion metric tons by 2050! This is Methane, we can not control!) This is 100 billion metric tons of Methane entering the atmosphere every 10 years.)

The scientists were able to scoop up buckets full of bubbling methane from within the five square meter hot spot in the East Siberian Sea! Subsea permafrost is similar to permafrost on shore, but underwater; it is found in shallow-water areas of the Arctic continental shelf, including areas of the Beaufort Sea and waters of the East Siberian Sea.
The next day the expedition discovered another giant seep hot spot in the same region. “The air in the vicinity registered methane concentrations of up to 16 ppm, which is 9xs the background rate.” said, Igor Semiletov of Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia’s oldest technical institution, who recently made a startling discovery aboard the Academic Mstislav Keldysh , the kind of discovery that sends chills down the spine, i.e., “methane bubbles boiling in water.” it is the “highest ever registered for a seep at sea.” He’s explored the Arctic forty times.

The Methane Detectives: On the Trail of a Global Warming Mystery

The concentration of methane in the atmosphere had been steadily rising since 1983, before levelling off around 2000. “And then, boom, look at how it changes here,” says, Research chemist Ed Dlugokencky at NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, pointing at a graph on his computer screen. “This is really an abrupt change in the global methane budget, starting around 2007.”

>Humans are directly responsible for about 60 percent of global emissions of methane. It seeps from rotting food waste in landfills, from anaerobic lagoons of pig manure, from rice paddies and exposed coal seams. It streams out of the vast metallic exoskeleton of oil and gas wells, pumping stations, pipelines, and refineries that entwine the globe. …
>Thawing permafrost, Wetlands are the largest single other source, contributing about 30 percent of total methane emissions globally. As it happens, they are also the biggest source of uncertainty…, according to Benjamin Poulter, a NASA researcher and contributor to the Global Carbon Project
“There are so many hypotheses and high impact papers out just in the last two years that cover the whole range of explanations for why there’s this renewed growth,” Poulter says. …
“It is a wicked problem,” adds Eric Kort, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Michigan, “but it’s not unsolvable.” …
The first theory to gain traction pinned the blame on fossil fuels, based on some suspicious timing: The use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing right around the time atmospheric methane levels shot up.

methane- Too much Methane! NOW! GHG! < < DANGER AHEAD!
https://undark.org/2019/05/13/methane-global-warming-climate-change-mystery/

Over a 20-year-time frame, methane will trap 86 times as much heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. It is responsible for about a quarter of total atmospheric warming (up until recently). And while steady increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are deeply worrying, they are at least conforming to scientists’ expectations. Methane is not. Methane — arguably humanity’s earliest signature on the climate — is the wild card.

What we saw was amazing!,” Vladimir Romanovsky, a professor of geophysics at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, told Reuters. “It’s an indication that the climate is now warmer than at any time in the last 5,000 or more years.“ …

BOOM in American Liquefied Natural Gas is Shaking Up the Energy World Oct. 16, 2017

The United States was supposed to be a big L.N.G. importer, not a world class exporter. The frenzy of drilling in shale gas fields across the country changed that over the last decade, creating a glut far larger than domestic demand could possibly consume.

The switch will remake the global gas market for decades to come. Energy experts are predicting that the transformation will weaken Russia’s dominance over European power markets, help clean the air in cities … and eventually provide cheaper and cleaner fuel to African villages.

… Many countries see the replacement of coal and heating oil by gas as a relatively painless way to reduce their carbon footprint, especially if potential methane leakage can be addressed. But many environmentalists say gas is only useful as a bridge fuel to a new age of renewables, if the bridge is short.
Major oil companies are understandably bullish on gas in the hopes that it extends their economic sustainability as the world moves to new, cleaner energy.

As Coal Fades in the U.S., “Natural Gas” Becomes the Climate Battleground!

America’s coal-burning power plants are shutting down at a rapid pace, forcing electric utilities to face the next big climate question: Embrace natural gas, or shift aggressively to renewable energy? …
A rush to build gas-fired power plants, even though they still emit as much as 1/2 the carbon pollution as coal, has the potential to lock in decades of new “fossil-fuel” use. In some USA states, policymakers are now pushing to leave “gas” completely behind to meet ambitious climate goals. Last week, New York lawmakers passed a sweeping energy bill that calls for the state to switch to entirely carbon-free electricity sources by 2040, following states like California and New Mexico that have passed similar laws….
“I really think gas is at the crux of it,” Mr. Pomerantz said. “You’ve got some utilities looking at gas and saying, ‘No thanks, we think there’s a cleaner and cheaper path.’ But then you’ve got others going all-in on gas.”

We Made It Visible.

These leaks, and many more, were invisible. Until we photographed them.
Immense amounts of methane are escaping from oil and gas sites nationwide, worsening global warming, even as the Trump administration weakens restrictions on offenders.
To the naked eye, there is nothing out of the ordinary at the DCP Pegasus gas processing plant in West Texas, one of the thousands of installations in the vast Permian Basin that have transformed America into the largest oil and gas producer in the world.
But a highly specialized camera sees what the human eye cannot: a major release of methane, the main component of natural gas and a potent greenhouse gas that is helping to warm the planet at an alarming rate.

Curbs on Methane, Potent Greenhouse Gas, to Be Relaxed in U.S.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration laid out on Thursday a far-reaching plan to cut back on the regulation of methane emissions, a major contributor to climate change.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule aims to eliminate federal requirements that oil and gas companies install technology to detect and fix methane leaks from wells, pipelines and storage facilities. It would also reopen the question of whether the E.P.A. had the legal authority to regulate methane as a pollutant.

Despite Their Promises, Giant Energy Companies Burn Away Vast Amounts of Natural Gas

…in recent years, some of these same companies have significantly increased their flaring, as well as the venting of natural gas and other potent greenhouse gases directly into the atmosphere, according to data from the three largest shale-oil fields in the United States.
The practice has consequence for climate change because natural gas is a potent contributor to global warming. It also wastes vast amounts of energy: Last year in Texas, venting and flaring in the Permian Basin oil field alone consumed more natural gas than states like Arizona and South Carolina use in a year. …
The analysis provides one of the clearest pictures to date of the companies behind the vast emissions of natural gas that have resulted from America’s shale oil boom, fueled by the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to unlock fossil fuels from shale rock.
Last year, operators across the three basins together flared or vented a record 320 million cubic feet of gas, more than 40 percent above levels seen just five years ago. The pace for the first two quarters of 2019 has been even higher.

Our Future Depends on the Arctic

Save it from the ravages of warming and we can save the planet. …
A study published in Geophysical Research Letters in June described the catastrophic consequences of losing the Arctic’s reflective summer sea ice. The ice is a great white shield that reflects incoming solar warming back to space during the long summer days of the midnight sun. Otherwise, it would be absorbed by the ocean. Losing this ice, the study explained, would be the warming equivalent of an extra 25 years of emissions at current rates
… California has shown the world how to reduce pollutants. The state has cut black carbon emissions by more than 90 percent since the 1960s
The risk of losing the Arctic’s stabilizing function for the global climate now appears far greater

Every State Should Monitor Methane to Meet Climate Goals

Opinion: A new plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New Mexico using satellites and big data sets a standard that other states should follow.
With the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent proposed rollback on the regulation of methane emissions, it’s also clear that states can’t rely on the federal government right now to act responsibly. It’s up to us. Fortunately, states have data-gathering tools at their disposal to shape effective policy, but they have to start using them now. …
It’s no secret that New Mexico’s percentage of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry is double the nationwide average; you can detect the plumes from space. …
The scientific reality is that we have a warming planet. New Mexico, along with 23 bipartisan governors who make up the United States Climate Alliance, is committed to upholding the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change within our borders. In order to meet those goals, we have to take aggressive action, in a very short amount of time, on a scale that’s never been done before.

To Fight Climate Change, One City May Ban Heating Homes With Natural Gas After two decades of reducing emissions across the coastal commmunity, city leaders are proposing to ban natural gas in residential buildings to curtail potent emissions that rise from that industry’s infrastructure.

An Eye in the Sky Could Detect Planet-Warming Plumes on the Ground

An Environmental group says it will spend millions to launch a satellite that could help fight climate change by identifying methane leaks with pinpoint accuracy …
Methane leaks are relatively inexpensive to fix, and stopping leaks allows energy companies to sell more gas. The International Energy Agency has estimated that as much as 50 percent of the 84 million tons of methane emitted by the oil and gas industry every year — from leaky wells and pipes and other causes — “can be mitigated at no net cost, because the value of the captured methane could cover the abatement measures.” …
Discussions and research on the project began in 2015, Mr. Krupp said, as a way to extend his group’s methane monitoring beyond North America. Since the 2016 election, the Trump administration and the E.P.A. administrator, Scott Pruitt, have tried to roll back Obama-era rules intended to crack down on leaks.
“We now see an added urgency that this satellite will give us data from the United States — much of it won’t be available any other way, given the actions that Pruitt has taken,” Mr. Krupp said. “We can’t wait for Washington, especially not now.”

New technologies are gearing up to find fugitive methane leaks

Not all leaks are equal
Locating methane leaks is a serious challenge. There are over two million oil and gas wells across North America (alone), and leaks are common. … Overall emissions are often dominated by a small number of large leaks: about five per cent of sources account for half of all emissions.
What we don’t know can hurt us
In the past, if leaks were missed during a routine inspection, no one would know. A missed leak could continue in silence, while regulators and industry would believe nothing was wrong.
In the future, it will be harder for companies to hide these leaks from the public. Many new technologies do not require site access and can be operated by anyone, including government compliance officers and nonprofit organisations.

The mainstreaming of shale gas technologies helps extract gas at as little as USD 3.5 per million cubic feet with promises of the price falling further.
