Packaging trends 2019: Part 1 – The search for sustainability:
Bio-based alternatives: Steady growth in 2019
In addition to paper-based packaging, bioplastics are also making a serious challenge to traditional plastics in 2019. Bioplastics have achieved relatively slow but consistent growth to date. Plastics Europe Market Research Group (PEMRG) estimates that bioplastics currently account for 6 percent of all plastics packaging. Meanwhile, European Bioplastics (EUBP), expects bioplastic global production to increase by 18.8 percent between 2017-2022.

Edible and biodegradeable plastics have been in the works for years now…As early as 2016, people were already talking about a milk based plastic that can be used to package food and you can even eat it. made of casein — a milk protein

Natureworks: What began in 1989 as a Cargill research project looking for uses of carbohydrates from plants for more sustainable plastics, quickly became the materials we are known for, today – Ingeo.
Ingeo is used for many of the single-use plastic items that are being outlawed today. But when they are made with Ingeo, their end-of-life scenario is clearly developed for the product to be produced.
There are 40 families of lifestyle products made with Ingeo bioplastic & fibers that are currently produced for hundreds of brands and retailers, selling to consumers worldwide. This product is historically biodegradable/compostable. Ingeo in Use

NatureWorks is jointly owned by Thailand’s largest chemical producer, PTT Global Chemical, and Cargill. Our manufacturing takes place in Blair, Nebraska, USA. Today, we have representatives in over 10 countries covering North America, Europe, Japan and Asia Pacific. We continue to work with converters, brandowners and retailers around the world to help introduce natural products.

Andrew Wheeler, who leads the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says he is “in favor of business”.
“Wheeler will try to keep his efforts “under the radar” when implementing Trump’s destructive agenda,” says Jeremy Symons, VP of the Environmental Defense Fund, “That should scare anyone [any thing] who breathes.”

If Wheeler is so in favor of business, he should put Environmental Action at the forefront….. Innovation Makes Business. The Printing and Packaging industry is an excellent example!

If you haven’t put “Green Business Practices” at the top of your print shop business agenda, you are crazy!

It is CLEAR. Green is “in favor of Business”.

Do not let anyone fool you.

Harmonised standards for bioplastics

Biobased
Compostable
If bioplastics have proven their compostability according to international standards, they can be treated in industrial composting plants. Plastic products can provide proof of their compostability by successfully meeting the harmonised European standard, EN 13432 or EN 14995. These two standards define the technical specification for the compostability of bioplastics products:
EN 13432:2000 for BioPlastic Packaging:
*Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation
*Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging
*This is a harmonised European standard linked to the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC). It asumes conformity with essential requirements of the Directive. It has been translated and implemented in all the European Member States. …

Recycling plastic: No quick fix in sight ??? What About MLP?

Jul 10, 2019 … large retailers and e-commerce giants, the largest users of banned plastic, continue to do so. These materials, especially multi-layer plastic (MLP), cannot even be recycled and end up in landfills, where they take hundreds of years to decompose. One of the most harmful forms of plastic is in use everyday – sachets used to hold shampoos, soaps, even readymade spices and the sealed packets that hold the chips our children eat. The material used in these cases includes aluminium, and is known as MLP, or multi-layered plastic. These end up in landfills, increasing the burden. Even ragpickers, who pick plastic waste to sell to recycling units, avoid this type.

An enzyme based technology for 100% biodegradable MLPs

New sustainable packaging solution from Uflex, parent company of FlexFilms
October 14, 2019 Uflex has developed a sustainable solution that quickly breaks down the molecular PE chains and biodegrades polymers back into harmless components like water, biomass, and carbon. It was presented at the recent PackPlus Conclave in New Delhi, further information will be unveiled in the coming months.
The Flexzyme technology
Flexzyme biodegrades plastic through bacterial, microbial action, moisture and heat.
Flexzyme is infused into polyolefins to biodegrade the polymers. The concentrations and dosage will affect the speed and rate of biodegradation.
Plastic products containing Flexzyme technology are food safe, certified according to US FDA Standard number 177.152. The Enzyme mediated polymer does not activate until it touches the soil ecosystem, composting, etc. Therefore, the ingredients will not affect a product either in the warehouse or its on-shelf life. They are not affected by premature biodegradation.
Flexzyme is suitable for use in LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, polypropylene and PET.
Flexzyme is based on organic ingredients only, contains no heavy metals or genetically modified crops and is 100% non-toxic
