Packaging trends 2019: Part 1 – The search for sustainability:
Bio-based alternatives: Steady growth in 2019
In addition to paper-based packaging, bioplastics are also making a serious challenge to traditional plastics in 2019. Bioplastics have achieved relatively slow but consistent growth to date. Plastics Europe Market Research Group (PEMRG) estimates that bioplastics currently account for 6 percent of all plastics packaging. Meanwhile, European Bioplastics (EUBP), expects bioplastic global production to increase by 18.8 percent between 2017-2022.
Edible and biodegradeable plastics have been in the works for years now…As early as 2016, people were already talking about a milk based plastic that can be used to package food and you can even eat it. made of casein — a milk protein
Google Goes Bio-plastics
Google Express goes green with Israeli compostable packaging. These packaging products will offer retailers and customers an eco-friendly option for shipping and receiving packages.
TIPA, founded by two Moms in 2010, produces an award-winning line of compostable flexible packaging already used in European countries for food and apparel. The durable TIPA material is made from a patent-protected combination of compostable materials, that include plant-based polymers. The company’s main focus is the end-of-life of packaging and it’s ability to be composted.
TIPA® has joined the New Plastics Economy’s Global Plastics Commitment, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. November 4, 2019 Daphna Nissenbaum, Co-founder and CEO of TIPA® stated that, “It will be very beneficial for us to be affiliated with and learn from them. The more than 400 organizations that have committed to their pledge of being recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.”
Most of TIPA’s products can be printed on the Flexo printing process. We also have the option to print on Gravure and digital, but we recommend if you have any questions, to contact us on your specific printing needs. TIPA’s products can be used on standard heat sealing machines, as well as low-temperature sealing machines.
We currently offer the following products in our TIPA Portfolio, working closely with food, non-food and packaging companies.

The essential components used for the production of MATER-BI are non-genetically modified corn starch and vegetable oils, cultivated in Europe using conventional agricultural practices.
Novamont collaborates with Unicoop Firenze
November 2012 Unicoop Firenze was the first large scale retailer in Italy to replace shopping bags with those of MATER-BI and from February 2014, adopting bioplastic bags and gloves in the fruit&vegetables departments in all its 103 points of sale.
2015, ONE Example is: Novamont collaborates with Lavazza From the strategic partnership between two leading Italian names came the compostable capsule made of MATER-BI. The result 5 years of research is a new paradigm of development that starts with coffee and uses circular economy principles to where the biodegradable capsule and used coffee are recycled together as compost.

Natureworks: What began in 1989 as a Cargill research project looking for uses of carbohydrates from plants for more sustainable plastics, quickly became the materials we are known for, today – Ingeo.
Ingeo is used for many of the single-use plastic items that are being outlawed today. But when they are made with Ingeo, their end-of-life scenario is clearly developed for the product to be produced. NatureWorks recently finalized a three-year partnership with The Ellen MacArthur Foundation in support of their New Plastics Economy Initiative.
There are 40 families of lifestyle products made with Ingeo bioplastic & fibers that are currently produced for hundreds of brands and retailers, selling to consumers worldwide. This product is historically biodegradable/compostable. Where to Buy Ingeo & Ingeo-Based Products:
Ingeo Partners – Use this tool to find suppliers near you.
NatureWorks is now a world-leading biopolymers supplier with its Ingeo portfolio of materials made from renewable, abundant feedstocks. These materials provide brand owners new certified cradle-to-cradle options for their products’ after-life.
NatureWorks is jointly owned by Thailand’s largest chemical producer, PTT Global Chemical, and Cargill. Our manufacturing takes place in Blair, Nebraska, USA. Today, we have representatives in over 10 countries covering North America, Europe, Japan and Asia Pacific. We continue to work with converters, brandowners and retailers around the world to help introduce natural products.
Carbon in the form of sugar from plants is where Natureworks, started to develop Ingeo. We continue to look for plant based sugars for Ingeo. Our next step is to look into making Ingeo from CO2 and Methane.
in favor of Business?
Andrew Wheeler, who leads the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says he is “in favor of business”.
“Wheeler will try to keep his efforts “under the radar” when implementing Trump’s destructive agenda,” says Jeremy Symons, VP of the Environmental Defense Fund, “That should scare anyone [any thing] who breathes.”
If Wheeler is so in favor of business, he should put Environmental Action at the forefront….. Innovation Makes Business. The Printing and Packaging industry is an excellent example!
If you haven’t put “Green Business Practices” at the top of your print shop business agenda, you are crazy!
It is CLEAR. Green is “in favor of Business”.
Do not let anyone fool you.
Know What Kind of Plastic you are printing on……
If bioplastics have proven their compostability according to international standards, they can be treated in industrial composting plants. Plastic products can provide proof of their compostability by successfully meeting the harmonised European standard, EN 13432 or EN 14995. These two standards define the technical specification for the compostability of bioplastics products:
EN 13432:2000 for BioPlastic Packaging:
*Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation
*Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging
*This is a harmonised European standard linked to the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC). It asumes conformity with essential requirements of the Directive. It has been translated and implemented in all the European Member States. …
Recycling plastic: No quick fix in sight ??? What About MLP?
Jul 10, 2019 … large retailers and e-commerce giants, the largest users of banned plastic, continue to do so. These materials, especially multi-layer plastic (MLP), cannot even be recycled and end up in landfills, where they take hundreds of years to decompose. One of the most harmful forms of plastic is in use everyday – sachets used to hold shampoos, soaps, even readymade spices and the sealed packets that hold the chips our children eat. The material used in these cases includes aluminium, and is known as MLP, or multi-layered plastic. These end up in landfills, increasing the burden. Even ragpickers, who pick plastic waste to sell to recycling units, avoid this type.
New sustainable packaging solution from Uflex, parent company of FlexFilms
October 14, 2019 Uflex has developed a sustainable solution that quickly breaks down the molecular PE chains and biodegrades polymers back into harmless components like water, biomass, and carbon. It was presented at the recent PackPlus Conclave in New Delhi, further information will be unveiled in the coming months.
The Flexzyme technology
Flexzyme biodegrades plastic through bacterial, microbial action, moisture and heat.
Flexzyme is infused into polyolefins to biodegrade the polymers. The concentrations and dosage will affect the speed and rate of biodegradation.
Plastic products containing Flexzyme technology are food safe, certified according to US FDA Standard number 177.152. The Enzyme mediated polymer does not activate until it touches the soil ecosystem, composting, etc. Therefore, the ingredients will not affect a product either in the warehouse or its on-shelf life. They are not affected by premature biodegradation.
Flexzyme is suitable for use in LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, polypropylene and PET.
Flexzyme is based on organic ingredients only, contains no heavy metals or genetically modified crops and is 100% non-toxic
Uflex & FlexFillms’ Manufacturing is present in all major continents and enjoys a formidable market presence in over 140 countries. FlexFilms‘ possesses the perfect solution to keep the converting industry ahead of its time!!!
