Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
Some growth forecast figures in the Printing and Packaging Industries…..
The Future of Global Printing to 2024
The worldwide print industry remains in a stage of transition. Between 2019 and 2024 overall value will increase at 1.3% year-on-year in real terms, from $818 billion in 2019 to $874 billion in 2024 – illustrating that value-adding potential still exists.
The Future of Global Packaging to 2024
In 2019 the total value of the packaging globally will be $917 billion according to the latest study from Smithers.
The comprehensive research employed in The Future of Global Packaging to 2024, shows that packaging demand will
grow steadily at 2.8% to reach $1.05 trillion in 2024.
It would seem to me that if the Packaging industry is growing at 2.8% and almost every package has some kind of printing, the Printing industry growth should be larger.*
Some of the trends that are driving the growth of this industry are:
1. Growth of Advertising – Growing advertising needs across the globe, along with technological advances, represent key factors driving market growth.
2. Cost Effective – Organizations still hire commercial printers as more cost-effective, efficient, better quality in bulk printing.
3. Going Green – Green commercial printers that use eco-friendly paper, inks, coatings and chemicals, and facilitate reducing and reusing waste, are projected to drive the growth of these markets further.
4. *Growth of the Packaging industry – from increased manufacturing and widespread use of high-quality printed packaging material for advertising, branding and e-commerce is another growth-inducing factor for the printing industry.

5. Continued demand for books – Steady consumption of physical hard and paper bound books continues, although e-books and e-journals are gaining.
6. Media and Document management services – Commercial printing vendors are expanding their services to include media and document management services.
7. Saturation and going to digital media are causing a decline in the USA printing industry, but there is expansion in developing regions.
Printing & Packaging MARKET TRENDS going Green
Here are examples of 2019 trends and companies that are taking them green, sustainable – Circular; suppliers that might be able to help you with your business:
DIGITAL PRINTING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
Digital print eliminates the need for printing plates and significant set up operations, commonly used in traditional printing and all of which require time, labor and money. In 2019, for those who have still not made that progressive investment in equipment, they are never-the-less joining the Circular Economy. Most of them have added digital to their analog shops within the past decade and the sustainable suppliers continue to make products to expand this method of printing to harmonize with planet Earth.
New Sustainable Digital Printing Paper from Koehler

Colorline IQ is the new digital printing paper from Koehler. Alongside the coarse, velvety surface, this digital printing paper stands out as it is made entirely from secondary fibers and has been awarded the Blue Angel ecolabel.
Colorline IQ has been specially developed for HP Indigo digital presses and offers high-contrast printing results with exceptional brilliance. A surface finish is applied to achieve these brilliant printing results, which are barely distinguishable from those of coated papers. True to the philosophy of “small print run – big impact,” digital printing papers are ideal for customized and personalized printing.
PERSONALIZED PACKAGING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
Due to the “small print run – big impact,” possible with digital printing to personalize a printing run, the trend to Small Personalized packaging services is on the rise.

Greenerprinter’s Variable Data Printing Services
What is “Variable Data Printing”? (VDP)
Variable data printing (also known as one-to-one marketing or personalized printing) offers customized printing that is a powerful marketing tool for even small organizations. VDP has been shown to dramatically increase response rates while reducing overall printing costs (due to shorter, more targeted print runs – digital printing).
It is an ideal solution for any printed material where you want to speak “directly” to your customer, even if it’s just making creative use of their first name.

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
According to the Flexible Packaging Association, the United States accounts for $135 billion in the world’s entire packaging industry. Flexible packaging materials are the second-largest form in existence. Flexible packaging takes in all non-rigid materials. The most popular flexible packages are wraps, bags, pouches and envelopes.
100% sustainable flexible packaging production plant opens in India

The world’s third largest producer of flexible packaging, Constantia Flexibles (Vienna, Austria), opens the world’s first plant designed to produce sustainable and recyclable flexible packaging only, in India. Production focus at the plant is totally on the environmentally friendly packaging family EcoLam. The official opening will take place on November 20, 2019 in Ahmedabad.
The Indian government is adopting “Plastic Waste Management Rules’ since 2016 prohibiting single-use plastic completely by the year 2022. That’s why Constantia Flexibles made a move to offer a solution at the source, in manufacturing.
We are not only focusing on environmentally friendly packaging, we designed this plant to produce sustainable packaging only. The Constantia Ecoflex Ahmedabad plant is located in Gujarat in India. Constantia Ecoflex Ahmedabad currently has 50 people working at the plant, a number that’s expected to triple by the second quarter of 2020.
The solutions produced at the new plant all belong to the innovative product family EcoLam, from the Constantia Flexibles’ product line Ecolutions. EcoLam is a lightweight mono-polyethylene laminate suitable for a wide variety of packaging applications. It is fully recyclable and has a carbon footprint 32% lower than that of comparable products.

VINTAGE PACKAGING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
The power of nostalgia – Vintage packaging also has an air of authenticity—increased familiarity means the consumer will instinctively trust the product more than modern, unfamiliar designs. Nostalgia has a tremendous effect on people, whether they’re young or old. For 2019, many companies are tapping into the vintage packaging trend and promoting products to reflect yesteryear’s values.

MINIMALIST PACKAGING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING

A kind of packaging minimalism:
Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) worth the investment

It reduces labor and inventory expense, lowers material usage, provides the consumer with a better experience and offers a sustainable solution. An optimized SRP solution moves the right amount of packages through the supply chain, reduces handling, increases sales and improves the fulfillment and replenishment process.

PACKAGING FOR E-COMMERCE PURCHASES – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING

The Intersection of E-commerce and Sustainable Packaging

The Intersection of E-commerce and Sustainable Packaging
Design Ideas for Sustainable E-commerce Packaging white paper from Adept Group
Sustainable packaging is becoming increasingly regulated. Stakeholders, such as consumers, institutions, municipalities, and NGO’s, are pushing to develop a circular economy, examining sustainability throughout the packaging lifecycle, impacting E-commerce. For example, these guidelines from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition were established to cover all phases of the life cycle standards for packaging:
1. Safe, and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle
2. Meet market criteria for performance and cost
3. Sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy
4. Use renewable or recycled source materials
5. Manufacture using clean production technologies and best practices
6. Use materials that retain quality of health throughout the life cycle
7. Use materials and energy most efficiently
8. Design recovery and reuse in biological and/or industrial closed loop cycles
…
Designing E-commerce Packaging for Sustainability
When designing E-commerce packaging for a more sustainable result consider these tips:
• Plan your sustainable strategy with your stakeholders (suppliers etc.).
• Avoid over designing; use special inks, coatings, or laminations that arerecyclable and sustainable.
• Do not over-pack. Minimize the amount of materials in your packaging; reducing material waste, cost, inventory, transportation weight and storage cost.
• Explore packaging options outside of the standard cardboard box.
• Determine any special need for heat or water resistant, flexible/soft etc.
• Design with a life-cycle, closed-loop mindset.
• Consider the best protective/liner part of your package – made of eco-material.
• Prevent combining materials which make it difficult to separate for being recycled.
• Investigate the health of the materials you plan to use.
• Inform your customers about how to recycle, reuse or return packaging (can be helpful as a marketing opportunity)

Adept (Packaging) Labs’ Loop Certified team understands the distribution environment, user requirements, and sterilization process that packaging endures in the Loop Program. We can manage your development needs to ensure packaging is robust enough to be reused multiple times. We have the capability to develop connected packaging solutions to ensure high return rates of packaging to complete the circular economy loop in the Loop Program.
Why sustainable packaging should be your top priority
e-commerce
A recent market study by Smithers Pira predicts demand for sustainable packaging material to double in 5 years: from $ 32.9 billion in 2018 to $ 63.3 billion by 2023.
Sustainable packaging: show your e-commerce customer that you care
study conducted by Mintel in 2018 in five European countries:
71% of respondents noted they would like to reuse their packaging for something else
57% would like to see less packaging
79% would like packaging to be 100% recyclable
76% would like to see packaging made from recycled materials
Shipping in minimal packaging – is because any superfluous packaging is costing you tons of money. Returning to the empty space problem: solving that issue alone could result in about $ 46 billion a year in potential savings, globally. And that’s a conservative estimate.
We didn’t set out to start a tissue company.

GREENER PACKAGING – Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
Three sustainability trends reshaping the food packaging industry
1. Corporate leaders are embracing sustainable food and beverage packaging
2. Governments are not only banning plastic, but mandating recycling and reusable materials
3. Innovative and sustainable food packaging is creating new solutions
Today’s consumers are far too aware of their environmental footprint. More people than ever are joining the ecological fight and doing their part to protect their share of the world. The packaging industry must recognize and respect consumers’ desire to maintain a smaller carbon footprint. They can do that by making smaller and greener packages. https://www.sustanagroup.com/

The Right Choice for Collaboration
Circular Trends in PRINTING & PACKAGING
The Healthy Printing network
We started the Healthy Printing Initiative because we wanted to get out
of this “chicken and eggs situation” where we actually have:
>Suppliers saying -well we could produce healthier and safer materials,
IF anyone asks for it.
>Buyers saying – we would buy better and more defined materials
IF anyone produced them.
>We knew it was possible on both sides and there actually was interest!
So!, We wanted to put these two groups together!
It is actually an Invitation for the suppliers to do R&D
together with clients and customers and develop
the products that we need to increase healthy print volume.
It is possible today, we just need to scale it up! We need more of it!
So Let’s do it!
