Use the Methane
What is causing most of the hot weather right now? Methane
Bertrand Piccard talking on the topic of methane
Transcript:
Very interesting Paradox’ yesterday’ about Methane …….During a panel where I participated together with Ministers of Energy from 50 different countries.
Methane was presented as 50 percent of the cause of global warming.
-So a really difficult problem to solve……
++But for me it’s the opposite!
Methane comes from waste: from agriculture, from farming, from oil & gas companies, from landfills …..
….and the Methane can be collected and turned into biogas!
Which represents 50% of the need for energy in the world.
So you see! Depending how you present Methane you can create optimism or pessimism.
Turn that biogas Methane into Electricity!
Africa is NOT causing most of the heat in our weather, but as people move into bigger and bigger communities in Africa….the piles of Garbage are making Methane!
Satellites reveal widespread emissions
from waste facilities across Africa
May 2024 – …………As one of the world’s fastest-growing regions, Africa’s waste generation is expected to triple by 2050. This increase will be mainly driven by the rapid increase of the continent’s population and the improvement of economic standards, often associated with increased consumption and an increased volume of waste…..
….With this in mind, CATF analyzed several waste management sites in Africa, to highlight the magnitude of the continent’s methane emission challenge. …The measurement campaign operated from February to October 2023; most sites were targeted twice. ….
……[On the ground], we used our gas analyzer, a highly sensitive portable methane-measuring instrument. ….As expected, the analyzer detected elevated methane concentrations on and around the sites, confirming our assumption that these sites are emitting methane…. Reducing methane pollution is an essential, first-line tool to slow global warming and avoid near-term impacts.
FROM POLLUTION TO SOLUTION IN AFRICA’S CITIES
November 2023 – ….Africa’s economic growth will be driven by fast-expanding cities. …By the end of the century, Africa will host 5 of the 10 largest megacities in the world.
….This report takes a sample of six large and fast-expanding African cities: Accra, Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi and Yaoundé.
….Based on the analysis, our report suggests that on their current path, some of Africa’s fastest-growing cities will see the financial costs of air pollution increase more than eightfold by 2040. On the flipside, these cities – and others like them – could unlock billions of dollars with policies and planning that enable green growth.
Apr 11, 2024 – Satellites Detect Massive Methane Emissions From Landfills | Firstpost America: Scientists are using satellites to detect methane emissions from space. They have found that landfills, which we often see near our homes, are one of the largest emitters of methane. Methane is a much more potent gas than carbon dioxide and it has 80 times more warming power than the latter.
Supercharge AFRICA!
This is what needs to change:
Where ever people live, there is Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
piling up.
Those piles exist everywhere.
Until we have another way to deal with MSW,
let’s capture the Methane energy from the pile! Landfill Gas (LFG) is seeping out of it into our sky.
If we capture that gas, we can make Electricity – For Africa!
…and Clean Africa’s Air!
I use videos to explain about the “Landfill Gas Process”.
Aside from the company PR, they do a good job of showing that Methane is captured in a Landfill and put to use!
……….They are making “Renewable” natural gas (RNG) from a Landfill.
Feb 10, 2021 – Located in Ferris, Texas, this state-of-the-art facility captures methane produced at the Skyline Landfill and converts it to pipeline quality natural gas. The facility processes up to 5,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) of incoming landfill gas, and uses it to fuel (WM) Waste Management, Inc.’s fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) garbage collection trucks. https://www.wm.com/
Parts of the Transcript:
Landfill Gas is mainly composed of methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas – 28 to 36 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in our atmosphere.
Landfill gas (LFG) can be upgraded to Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) by reducing its carbon dioxide and nitrogen content and conversely increasing its methane concentration. Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is pipeline quality gas and can be used to fuel either compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas vehicles, replacing the need for traditional fossil fuels, keeping [fossil] natural gas in the ground and putting landfill gas to good use.
Turning Landfill Gas into RNG-Renewable Natural Gas
In the spring of 2020, we opened our largest and most sophisticated renewable natural gas facility…………………….
Cleaning to RNG Quality [also for cooking]
The renewable natural gas facility uses a membrane-based separation system for removal of carbon dioxide from the landfill gas stream. The outgoing gas from these membranes is then processed for removal of nitrogen by pressure swing adsorption. The final product gas is then pressurized for delivery into the natural gas pipeline system through a state-of-the-art control room. Our WM operators can optimize each step of the process for maximum recovery.
RNG to CNG a Transportation Fuel [also cooking fuel]
This renewable natural gas [RNG] is put to work fueling WM’s fleet of compressed natural gas [CNG] vehicles. The largest heavy-duty natural gas truck fleet of its kind in north America. ………………………………………
Cutting Greenhouse Gases
For every diesel-powered truck we replace with [Renewable] natural gas, we reduce our [fossil] fuel use by an average of 8000 gallons, an equivalent of 14 metric tons of greenhouse gas every year. Compressed natural gas vehicles emit nearly zero particulate emissions and are quieter than diesel trucks. This helps improve the air quality in our neighborhoods and in our communities.
How does a Landfill produce Electricity!
From RNG we can produce Electricity! No fossil fuels involved!
….here’s what the whole picture looks like…………..
Slow and commercial, but talks about what you can get from your Waste!

The Transcript:
Meeting government regulations is not the only reason to seek alternatives for disposing of the methane gas produced at landfill sites. Modern landfills are required to install gas collection systems to capture and destroy the methane gases that are naturally produced within a landfill.
What to do with the Methane – Do not Burn – Put it to work!
These gases are burned in a flare rather than eliminating landfill gas by simply burning it off. Caterpillar (Cat) can help you turn it into a renewable fuel. We do that by providing gas fueled engine generators that can produce electric power from landfill gas. Power that you can sell to the electrical grid. Cat generators burn the gas cleanly to meet air quality standards, so you can satisfy safety regulations and start putting landfill methane gas to work.
Caterpillar gas fueled engine generator operations “gensets”
1. When landfill gas fuel generators are implemented, water is removed from the fuel and sometimes additional fuel conditioning equipment is used to reduce contaminants before they enter the engine. Cat landfill “gensets” use special components specifically designed to operate on landfill gas fuels. Multiple gensets can be used to match the production of landfill fuel that grows and dissipates over several years.
2. Installing electrical paralleling switchgear allows generators to operate in parallel with each other and the electric utility. Generator sets can be housed in individual enclosures or a single building.
3. Remote radiators are used to cool the engines.
Electric Power to the Grid
1. Now the complete powerhouse is finished. To export the electricity to the utility grid requires that the power be fed to a regional substation.
2. The electricity generated at the landfill can be sold to the local electric utility – oftentimes at a premium. Many utilities are mandated to provide a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources. Utilization of landfill gas generator sets can result in both renewable energy credits and carbon reduction credits.
3. In some cases, the electricity and the waste heat generated from a power plant can be used directly by adjacent businesses. Power lines are installed to deliver electricity while heat exchangers are employed to capture and transfer waste heat from the engines

30+ years of Electricity from Landfill Gas……………
May 11, 2012 – The Short Mountain Landfill is celebrating its 20th anniversary of methane gas being converted to electricity….AND is still running in 2024 – “We’ve since been producing local renewable energy at the site for the past 30+ years. Our current contact with the County provides us the use of the gas rights at Short Mountain through the year 2042.” https://www.epud.org/short-mountain-explained/
Did you hear? This project took 7 years to pay off and has been running for the last 30 years.
In Africa: >> There is a lot of room for NEW TECHNOLOGY!
The African Continent has been working on Landfill Gas to Electricity projects since the late 2000’s. There have been a great many technological advancements in this process. What may not have been operational in the past, FOR SURE is operational Today.
Mariannhill Landfill, Durban, SA
This Landfill Gas to Electricity site has been running for almost 20 years.
Sep 17, 2019 – African population is growing rapidly and providing enough power for future generations is one of the main challenges. In Durban, ZAF, electric power is generated by Gas Engines that runs on Landfill Gas and powers ~3500 homes.

There is a lot of literature on this project that started in ~2004. By early 2017, this project called LG2EP had already delivered more than SAR174 million worth of electricity. From 2012-2013, while producing between 450,000 and 650,000 kWh of electricity per month, the facility provided electricity for approximately 500 to 4000 households.
Example of new technology………….
December 2023 – The US Environmental Protection Agency aired a webinar that points to some very very important new technology for Landfills across the world. Webinar: Electricity Options for Remote Location or Low Landfill Gas Flow worth a look!
Vespene Energy Is one the the companies discussed.
At Vespene Energy, we’re turning landfill methane into a valuable resource through our biogas-to-energy microgrid systems.
Vespene provides cost-free methane reduction solutions for small – medium sized landfills by using methane emissions to power self-sustaining microgrids.

Vespene Energy’s Self-Sustaining Microgrids allow small landfills to profitably contribute to the renewable energy transition. WITHOUT REQUIRING A GRID INTERCONNECT
Vespene Self-Sustaining Microgrids mean operation within months with interruptible datacenters that enable energy for leachate management, EV charging, facility power, and other site loads. This ensures that 100% of the electricity is always put to beneficial use; power assets running continuously.
Technologies have advanced. Business in LFG is growing. It is possible to do even more Today!
Example of new technology………….
Cape Town, SA
Cape Town getting closer to turning waste into wattage
February 2024 – [If you read this article, it describes some of the complex requirements to filter Landfill Gas (LFG) before it is used in the combustion generator. ]
TOO BAD they are not going to use one of the new Linear Generators. One is Mainspring that requires 70% less filtering of LFG, is mechanical – not combustion – so the maintenance costs are far lower! This is extremely new technology with sales that began in the last 3 years. The company wants to expand as soon as is possible. The price of this linear generator is going to get lower than a combustion generator. And the savings in “gas preparation cost” and “operations maintenance expenses” already make it worth considering.
Open to International business:
Mainspring is close to closing their first international contract and getting inquiries and interest (and investors) outside the USA. To get introduced to the right person click here:

Another Example of new technology………………….
Rwanda
Afrik 21, Feb. 2023 – In Rwanda, the city of Kigali will have a modern landfill to manage its household and similar waste. The facility, which will replace the existing landfill in the Nduba area, will convert organic waste into biogas, electricity and fertilizer for agriculture.
There are new approaches to Landfill Gas filtration called. One is called
AMD – Archaea Modular Design

Archaea Energy, a bp subsidiary since 2022, independently and through its joint ventures, operates 50 RNG sites with a presence in 32 USA states that capture methane from waste to produce RNG.
Archaea’s growth will use their “off-the-shelf” production components at the roughly 80 sites in its project pipeline. Its unique AMD platform streamlines the time it takes to construct RNG plants, which are traditionally custom-built.
Archaea can place modular units on skids (mobile foundations) with interchangeable components for faster installation to operation. An AMD facility can process 3,200 Standard Cubic Feet/Minute (scfm) of landfill gas (LFG) per minute into RNG. AMD plants are designed to come in three sizes – 3,200 scfm; 6,400 scfm; and 9,600 scfm. Archaea’s RNG plants use vacuum pressure to gather the LFG emissions, then remove the impurities and destroy them. … Archaea’s RNG facilities support neighboring industries, including construction, engineering, equipment vendors and utilities.
Archaea is focusing largely on landfills that are the largest source of LFG and produce methane reliably many years both before and after closer, making them an attractive feedstock for RNG.
It is time for more African’s to get into these businesses!
Another Example of new technology………………….
Cote d’Ivoire
Project management for the rehabilitation of the Akouédo landfill in Abidjan. Veolia, through Seureca, proposes Recycling and recovery from a closed Landfill. The rehabilitation work began in 2021 and includes: Energy recovery from the biogas.
That is a “Closed Landfill” that they talk about in Cote d’Ivoire!
There is now at least one electricity generator that can capture and use RAW Landfill Gas in closed landfills…………………

FREE PISTON STIRLING ENGINE
from Qnergy
Direct operation on raw, unrefined Landfill Gas (LFG) from landfills
- A landfill has two periods of
low methane emissions
1. The Start of a Landfill
2. The Closed Landfill - These periods represent significant periods of unregulated emissions in most Landfills
- Free Piston Stirling is a best fit for these two periods
Landfill Gas to Electricity projects are operating around the world and producing lots of Electricity! Look here:
Landfill Gas Projects Worldwide – – – Clean Up The Air, Now!
Supercharge AFRICA!
I have 2 things to say:
1. Africa needs Electricity & cooler weather.
2. Today, One of the most advantageous ways to get Electricity is to use the Landfill Gas (LFG) emissions from Municipal Solid Waste landfills.
Capture the Methane in LFG, use it to make RNG and produce Electricity – and in doing so cool off the weather!!!!! (and clean up the smells…)
This is another form of “Renewable Energy” and it can be a constant supply of LFG long after a Landfill site has been closed (as much as 20+ years). It can benefit the local community and use up a dangerous greenhouse gas that is heating our climate.
Methane [from landfills] is the “blow torch” that is pushing us from warming to Global boiling!
Want to slow down warming? >>>>>>>>>>> “Turn off the blow torch”!
From the IPCC CLIMATE CHANGE 2023, Summary for Policymakers
C.2.3 ………Strong, rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions can limit near-term warming and improve air quality by reducing global surface ozone (high confidence).

Investment & Funding: Real & Strategies
The Main Strategy here is that Landfill Gas (LFG) Projects deal with a number of important issues:
>>Waste Management for your Community
>>The Urgent need to Cut Methane Emissions
>>The Urgent need to Prevent Health Problems
>>Power Utilities that will buy Electricity or..
>>RNG companies looking for Transportation Fuel [Cooking Fuel]
Depending upon the size and what your community does with the LFG, you should plan a funding strategy from various issue directions….. here are suggestions about where to look for funding or advice:
Changing the perspective of waste from something that’s discarded into a renewable source of energy!
Extracting value from waste is part of what makes Interwaste a forerunner in the waste management sector in southern Africa.
More Than Meets the ‘I’: The True Cost of Poor Waste Management
Waste is not just about what we throw away – it’s about the hidden costs of neglecting to manage it effectively and responsibly throughout the value chain. In South Africa, poor waste management practices have led to environmental degradation, economic strain, and social challenges that impact communities across the country. As we confront these issues, it’s clear that the true cost of waste mismanagement is far greater than what meets the eye. …

UNTAPPED POTENTIAL:
INVEST IN WASTE MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN AFRICA
Africa’s rapid urbanization is leading to increased volumes of municipal, industrial, and electronic waste. The demand for effective waste management systems is critical to mitigate environmental pollution and health risks associated with uncontrolled disposal practices. Governments across the continent are enacting stringent environmental regulations and waste management policies. This regulatory framework creates a conducive environment for investment in modern waste management infrastructure and technologies, addressing pressing environmental challenges while promoting sustainable practices.

8.1.1. Value proposition based on waste management rather than electricity sales
….It is increasingly clear from the evidence of successful projects and the needs of the finance community that designing biogas projects as “waste management” projects is more compatible with success than designing them as electricity projects.
Mobilizing Finance for Methane Action in Africa November 2023
>>Waste
The waste sector presents a formidable challenge for rapid action in reducing methane emissions on the continent … …To reduce the fiscal incidence and further strengthen waste management techniques, African governments and State actors would be well-advised to explore ways to increase private sector involvement in the delivery of waste management services, notably through improved processes of contracting, concession, franchise, and open competition.
>>Leveraging available financing for methane abatement finance
Considering the substantial global benefits and the practicality of swift measures in the 19 major African emitters, there is a pressing need to redirect development partner financing to methane action, particularly in the agriculture and waste sectors. This paper outlines the various sources of development and climate financing that can be tapped by African countries to meet immediate methane mitigation needs.
PROJECT PREPARATION for FUNDS: AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR UNLOCKING INVESTMENT IN SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE IN AFRICA
Experience shows that “Cities and Climate” project preparation funds [feasibility studies] effectively deal with two shortcomings; bolster/encourage the local teams and make up for the lack of financial resources available within African municipalities to hire the costly preparation needed for feasibility studies of a municipal project.
>>Funding preliminary studies – a vector for private sector involvement: CICLIA and CoM SSA funds, One example: In Djibouti, CICLIA has financed a feasibility study for a new sanitary landfill site that complies with waste treatment standards.
HOW AFRICA CAN OVERCOME ITS METHANE FINANCING CHALLENGE
“Africa is the least risky region to do investment in infrastructures – the default rate for financed projects is only 5.5%, the lowest in the world. We need to change the narrative of risk by harnessing digital technologies, exploring concessional funding, and establishing a one-stop shop for all investing instruments,” Abdoul Salam Bello, Executive Director of the Africa Group II at the World Bank Group, observed.
The African Methane Abatement Bond (AMAB) [Landfills not included, but should be] It is widely agreed that mobilizing methane financing in Africa will require a new paradigm that is not reliant on the intricate bureaucracies of the global financial architecture. Hence, AfriCatalyst is proposing an innovative solution – the African Methane Abatement Bond (AMAB). This financing scheme envisions a collaboration between pan-African financial institutions, global philanthropies, and leading global asset management and investment firms.

Global Methane Hub (GMH) Annual Impact Report 2023

Most of our investments go to countries, communities, and centers of innovation across the Global South. That’s because methane emissions are closely tied to economic and energy development—they come from mines and megacity landfills, farmers’ fields and refineries—and researchers estimate that low and middle-income countries (LMICs)
will account for 83% of methane emissions worldwide by 2050.
From the International Energy Agency: June 2024 – Clean Energy Investment for Development in Africa – which outlines target areas for energy investment on the continent and explores the best financing options – supports a flagship initiative launched by Italy’s G7 Presidency at the recent Leaders’ Summit in Apulia. Called Energy for Growth in Africa, the initiative aims to help foster a strong pipeline of bankable clean energy projects on the continent and to improve access to financing so the projects can come to fruition.
The urgent need for expanding access to energy in Africa is highlighted in this year’s edition of Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report.
Jul 29, 2022 – AGF remains committed to developing products that support financial institutions to scale up lending activities to SMEs. [I only found evidence that the AGF helps guarentee solar energy companies. But there are SME’s in the Waste Management sector that could be tied to Landfill Gas to Electricity projects!]

Despite the great promise it holds for curbing global warming, reducing pollution, and creating economic opportunity, methane abatement accounts for only 2 percent of climate finance today. Dedicated initiatives such as IFC’s Circularity Plus platform—which provides companies and municipalities with investment and advisory solutions that accelerate the waste-to-value approach—are seeking to close such gaps and raise awareness about the possibilities. As part of the World Bank Group delegation, IFC has showcased its efforts to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, resilient and inclusive growth in emerging markets.

Jul 26, 2021 – Landfill gas forms when waste breaks down. It comprises around 50% methane and 50% carbon dioxide. Gas is extracted from the landfill by using pipes and burnt in a generator to create electricity, which supplies power to the electricity grid via a transformer. On the Central Coast the landfill gas captured at our landfill sites generates the equivalent power needs for almost 5,000 homes.
