Do you have any real idea how many piles of Garbage
there are on planet Earth?
A Garbage Pile next to Each Settlement, Village, Colony of people.

Where there are people living together there is a pile of garbage next to them.
Do These maps help you see the full picture?
There are many maps that talk about the piles of garbage and the greenhouse gases they produce. Do you get a sense of the full picture by looking at any of them? How many piles of garbage do you think there are on planet Earth based on any of these maps?

THE FULL PICTURE
involves the density
of the worldwide Human population.
The above feature image of this post is a map of
Global Population Density.
and we all know that………
Most Human Colonies on planet Earth have
a pile of garbage next to them.

Each Dot is a Colony of some size.
The whiter it is, the more people live in that area….more garbage.
The fewer dots, the less colonies – less garbage.
But, still look how many dots there are!
The important thing to understand is that
AT MOST OF THESE DOTS, THERE IS SOME KIND OF
PILE OF GARBAGE.
WHAT DO THOSE PILES OF GARBAGE DO? Well we know……………….
They are Ugly.
They Smell as the garbage begins to decompose producing greenhouse gases.
The fumes can make you sick…..It is methane and other greenhouse gases seeping into the air….not healthy for the animals or plants on planet Earth.

HOW DO THOSE PILES OF GARBAGE START?

Maybe not all but most of those Dots have a PILE OF TRASH
next to them.
When you think about the WHOLE BIG PICTURE…..there is a lot of garbage around the world making a mess – all seeping GREENHOUSE GASES that we could use.
Waste Wise Cities – from the UN

Waste Wise Cities Tool – Step by Step Guide to Assess a City’s Municipal Solid Waste Management Performance through the SDG indicators. The tool has been translated to various languages
Waste Wise Online Courses to study the solutions.
The idea of Mysore corporation was to decentralize the waste management system and to ensure public participation in turning organic waste into resources. Mysuru City Corporation has one centralized compost unit that has a screening system to separate out non-recyclable materials and produces compost by using the wind-row composting method. They are planning another. The city corporation is also encouraging people to start biogas units at the household level. The unique decentralized waste management approach by Mysuru has shown the India how to convert Waste to Wealth. But more than anything, Mysore’s success story is one where people and their government work together to keep their city clean.
UN-Habitat will support cities that want to become
Waste Wise in the following action areas:
- Waste Data & Monitoring (e.g. feedback on available data, support in collection of data with Waste Wise Cities Tool)
- Knowledge & Good Practices Sharing (e.g. Newsletter, City-to-city Partnerships, Waste Wise Academy)
- Advocacy & Education (e.g. educational toolkit, awareness raising material)
- Project Finance & Bankability Support (e.g. for drafting project proposals, marketplace)

More Gas than they think!
Call me crazy! I do not believe what organizations say about Landfills. They say Waste is the 3rd largest source of man-made methane emissions in the world. I say it is at least the 2nd largest, if not the biggest. Look at the density of human populations in the world….there is every chance that I am correct. And there is growing evidence too:
A guide to monitoring and quantifying methane emissions from the waste sector
February 2024 – …in 2022, scientists used a combination of satellite instruments to monitor emissions from landfills in Buenos Aires, Delhi, Lahore, and Mumbai; they detected emissions reaching a staggering 29 tonnes of methane per hour and up to 2.6 times the officially reported values. Moreover, they found that landfill emissions can reach up to 50% of the emissions in these cities.
GHGSat [satellite] research shows landfills are undercounting methane emissions
In 2023 – the waste sector had the highest site emissions rate — on average, waste facilities emitted 1,250 kilograms of methane per hour, compared to 245 kilograms per hour in the oil and gas sector. The waste sector also had the highest persistence rate, at 69%, meaning “detected emissions from landfills were larger and more likely to be observed repeatedly across multiple satellite passes,” per the report. GHGSat performs multiple flyovers of thousands of sites around the world with its fleet of methane-detecting satellites.
Study finds landfill point source emissions have an outsized impact and opportunity to tackle U.S. waste methane – 2024 CarbonMapper
(1) Fifty-two percent (52%) of surveyed landfills had observable point source emissions. This far exceeds the 0.2% to 1% detection rate observed for super-emitters from surveyed oil and gas infrastructure in California and the Permian Basin, TX. One of the Carbon Mapper scientists, Dr. Daniel Cusworth, said, “we do find that for the landfills we surveyed in the U.S., they were on average 40% higher in emissions than what’s used for the US Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
1/2 of Landfill Gas is Methane, which is 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (during its first 20 years in the sky) at warming our attmosphere.
If captured, the Methane can be used as a clean, valuable, economic fuel resource. It can significantly reduce the Waste’s impact on climate change and help us produce fuel!

Landfill Gas is useful, Cash……..
We can capture the gases from the decomposing garbage and use it for Transportation Fuel and/or Electricity. We need to use this gas and then close the Landfill and find a better way to deal with man-made garbage.
FIRST CLEAN UP THE GREENHOUSE GASES in those landfills and that will clean up the messes around your community.
French energy company to produce renewable natural gas from Chester County landfill waste
“By being able to recover that pollution, turning that pollution into energy, we avoid releasing methane directly into the atmosphere, and we produce a green energy that is valuable, that is cheap, and our view of renewable energy is that it should be affordable.” said Guénaël Prince, U.S. CEO of Waga Energy.

When you do this, you
Solve Two Puzzles With One Solution!
>>You capture the gas to use it.
>>You clean up your neighborhood.

Yes, FIRST let’s use the Landfill Gas!
There is already new technology that makes Fuel and then the garbage disappears!
But First we should use the Waste Piles that already exist, capture their gas and get the value from them!
I have been campaigning to First use the Landfill Gas to good, valuable use as transportation fuel or for producing electricity.

Mar 14, 2025 – Lagos, we did it! On February 28th, 2025 we came together at Obada Market, Obalende, Nigeria’s model city to tackle waste, restore cleanliness, and show that a cleaner Lagos is possible! It was a movement with The Caise Foundation and Green Janitors as key partners, Dr. Derin Phillips led a passionate team to transform the environment and inspire change. Watch as everyday people roll up their sleeves, clear out trash, unblock gutters, and turn a messy space into something we can all be proud of. 🏆

Mar 3, 2025 – Despite the obstacles, the garbage collectors were not discouraged, knowing that their work was crucial for keeping the town clean and healthy. They continued to do their best, navigating the containers around the parked cars and always finding a way to get the job done. One day, some residents who had noticed the struggle of the garbage collectors decided to do something about it. They started to spread the word about how important it is to keep the areas around the containers clear. The message went quickly from person to person, and soon, more and more residents began parking their cars responsibly.

World Cleanup Day

People are getting wiser about cleaning up the messes and capturing Value from the Waste.
World Cleanup Day is observed annually on 20 September to address the global waste management challenges through coordinated voluntary action and improved collaboration to reduce waste pollution. A source of good ideas…………………..
