Waste: The commodity of the future
Maximising the value of your untapped resources

Waste is everywhere, and waste is constant. While waste is often viewed as a dilemma, at PAConsulting we see opportunity and value.
Forward-looking organisations are rethinking processes and challenging attitudes about waste. The biggest and often most unexpected opportunities come from repurposing waste into entirely new business opportunities, turning it into value – also known as valorization.
It’s up to you to take the first step. Don’t waste the opportunity!
Where can you find information on Waste?
Lots of places…………..

Zero waste takes off – Resource Recycling, Inc.
Editor’s note: This is the second of a two-part series on the history of the zero waste movement and its impact; see part 1 here.
June 2024 – Our three legacy movements — recycling, anti-incineration and zero waste — are working expeditiously to reach 90% diversion with no incineration, organics out of landfills and no toxics in our packages or products. Communities, businesses and local governments today are equipped with strategic policies and programs that were not available when the three legacy movements emerged prior to 2000.
June 2025 – On May 15, George Smith, director of MSU AgBioResearch, and Wei Liao, director of the MSU Anaerobic Digestion Research and Education Center (ADREC), testified in front of the Michigan House Agriculture Committee that through cutting-edge anaerobic digestion research and deployment, MSU researchers are demonstrating how agricultural and food waste can be harnessed to produce clean energy, recover valuable resources and protect the Great Lakes ecosystem.

WasteMAP is a collaboration between RMI and Clean Air Task Force (CATF) with generous support from The Global Methane Hub and Google.org. The Waste Methane Assessment Platform, or WasteMAP, was created to improve waste methane emissions transparency, and to highlight mitigation opportunities and best practices to reduce solid waste methane emissions.

Climate TRACE is a non-profit coalition of organizations building a timely, open, and accessible inventory of exactly where greenhouse gas emissions are coming from. We need additional information about exactly where and when greenhouse gas emissions are occurring in order to set actionable goals to reduce them.

Carbon Mapper‘s data portal includes observations of thousands of methane and CO2 plumes. Data is sourced from multiple sensors onboard aircraft, satellites, and other space-based systems and added on an ongoing basis.

Founded in 1977, Californians Against Waste is a non-profit environmental research and advocacy organization. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: We have sponsored or helped craft almost all of California’s major nation-leading recycling policies.
WasteAid has launched the Zero Waste Cities Challenge to find entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas that help reduce or recycle waste and create green employment opportunities.
WasteAid works with communities and policy makers in low and middle-income countries to implement circular solutions focused on waste management and recycling.
“The ‘Waste to Use Challenge is an important element of WasteAid’s CIWM-funded Project Dennakuwo. The challenge helps Gambian entrepreneurs develop Gambian solutions, pioneering ways to recover, reuse and divert waste from dump sites. It is a fantastic example of how nurturing innovation can lead to the protection of the world’s environment and resources for future generations.
Harness the Benefits of Biogas – from Organic Waste
Biogas systems recycle decomposable Waste– like manure, food waste, wastewater solids and other organic material–into energy and fertilizer.
There is an urgent need to manage millions of tons of food, water and animal waste. The main benefits of biogas systems come from the fact that they are recycling all this material by producing renewable energy and soil fertilizers.
The American BioGas Council estimates that in the USA alone about 17,000 additional biogas projects could be built to:
*convert waste into valuable domestically-produced energy
*improve crop yields and nutrients
*preserve landfill space
*create good-paying jobs
These new biogas systems hold the potential:
>>>To produce lots and lots more Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
>>>To produce as much as 29 gigawatts of 24/7 electricity
>>>To create thousands of short-term construction jobs, permanent operations jobs, and other indirect supply chain jobs.

The idea of Mysore corporation was to decentralize the waste management system and to ensure public participation in turning organic waste into resources. Mysuru City Corporation has one centralized compost unit that has a screening system to separate out non-recyclable materials and produces compost by using the wind-row composting method. They are planning another. The city corporation is also encouraging people to start biogas units at the household level. The unique decentralized waste management approach by Mysuru has shown India how to convert Waste to Wealth. But more than anything, Mysore’s success story is one where people and their government work together to keep their city clean.

Research
There are thousands+ research projects on all aspects of Waste. Below I mention some unusual ones………….

Global Waste Research Institute
Transforming waste into opportunities
A Global Initiative for the Advancement of Waste and Byproduct Research
All human and industrial activities result in generation of waste and byproducts. In the U.S. alone, the amount of waste and byproducts generated on an annual basis is measured in hundreds of millions of tons. At GWRI, our mission is to advance the development of sustainable technologies and policies for more effective management of these materials.

Alliance to End Plastic Waste
The global plastic waste challenge requires solutions that are beyond the capabilities of any single organisation. At the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, we drive systems by harnessing the power of collective action.
Ideas come from anywhere in the world. That’s why we partnered with Plug and Play Tech Center in 2019 to develop the End Plastic Waste Innovation Platform for startups from across the plastic value chain. In February 2020, we kickstarted the first Selection Day with 10 finalists in our inaugural Silicon Valley hub. This was followed by the Paris hub programme, and the Singapore hub programme all in August 2020. We aee providing the startups with access to world-class resources and expertise through the accelerator platform.
Sustainability by numbers [email protected]
Around a decade ago I read a book that changed the lens that I view the world through.
David MacKay’s Sustainable Energy – without the hot air was the book I had been waiting for. MacKay stepped back and crunched the data on what the UK’s energy system looked like at that time, and how feasible a transition to net-zero would be. Not based on instincts, but on data. Big data. It was a breath of fresh air.
I don’t only look at energy. Sustainability spans a range of environmental impacts: from climate and energy, to food, deforestation the oceans, and resource consumption – key parts of sustainability.

Surplus recycled
Making good Happen through REUSE

Millions of perfectly usable items end up in landfills every year – overflow inventory, returns, and even material excess. Instead of spending time, money, and energy on disposal, Happen Ventures sets up reuse programs that divert surplus to people and communities in need!
Transform your excess inventory into meaningful impact

The Charity Hub is changing the narrative
Even the most sophisticated and successful companies can experience inventory challenges. The Charity Hub’s approach presents a new way to enable companies to amplify the benefit of monetizing their excess inventory and at the same time protect the planet and enhance the lives of those in need.
We are a social enterprise helping to fix inventory challenges, not landfills.

The Charity Hub (TCH) officially launched in 2021 with a mission to help reduce consumer product waste. Through our partnerships, TCH generates what every nonprofit needs most – cash to fund their programs and services – all while solving challenging inventory issues for businesses and extending the useful lives of goods which supports a company’s commitment to Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) goals.
the Value of Waste
Strengthening communities through building material reuse.
Turning waste into wealth and opportunity
Jan 16, 2023 – Lifecycle Building Center is a nonprofit that captures building materials from the waste stream and directs them back into the community through reuse.
Material reuse is a sustainable way to divert construction waste destined for landfills. Material reuse can create a number of financial benefits for communities by lowering disposal costs, reducing tax liabilities for material donors and providing access to low-cost or free building materials. Deconstruction, or the selective removal of building materials for reuse, also helps create green jobs; for every one job created through “demolition”, 7 jobs can be generated through de-construction. Material reuse also has many positive environmental impacts, such as reducing the extraction of natural resources.
CDI World USA helps support LBC by being both a material donor and corporate sponsor. CDI World specializes in the creation and delivery of trade show exhibitions, event structures, retail interiors, and commercial environments for top brands and corporations.
