It’s going to take time before the world stops using the plastic that does not decompose. Especially when – Not all bio-plastics decompose the same way! We have to be careful how we throw away.

Why “Biodegradable” Isn’t What You Think

You care about the planet, and would like to avoid bottles and other goods made of single-use plastic. But it’s complicated.
Choosing products with packaging that claims to be “biodegradable” or “compostable” might mean that they degrade only under special conditions, and could complicate recycling efforts, said Jason Locklin, the director of the New Materials Institute at the University of Georgia. “It’s tremendously confusing, not just to the consumer, but even to many scientists,” he said.
Here are four examples of the kinds of products you might see on supermarket shelves or at the takeout counter. It’s not an exhaustive list, but one that can give you a sense of the issues that people face.
Corn-based plastic; PLA
Paper, kind of; paper+ plastic
Fiber; bagasse
Bacteria do the work; PHA

Not the old days….glass bottles, ceramic dishes, paper straws. All of this new stuff has not been standardised and we have to be careful what we do with it. Throwing stuff away is not that simple.
So let’s choose one type and make a business from it!

It’s going to take time before the world stops using plastic bottles that do not decompose.

The Unexpected Boom In Startups

November 10, 2020 – NPR … Every new business that hires workers, has to apply for an employer identification number with the government, and when the coronavirus pandemic began, the data showed what you might expect – a collapse in new business applications. But then, about six weeks into the pandemic, the numbers started rising.

And then the new business applications just kept rising. The third quarter of 2020 is the highest quarter of applications ever seen. [People have been making plans!]

and

Look at all the Waste Plastic businesses that are already populating the world.

No significant reduction in the amount of waste around us. THERE IS LOTS OF ROOM FOR WASTE PLASTIC BUSINESS!

The idea of prototypes comes to mind. Using Waste Plastic is a Resource! So you have an idea for a product or something you would like to design and maybe produce. Maybe use Waste Plastic to try out your idea. If you don’t want to set up your own shop, find a Precious Plastic workshop near you and work out your ideas with them.

We are Precious Plastic a global community of hundreds of people working towards solutions to plastic pollution. Knowledge, tools and techniques are shared online, for free, open source.

Gjenge Makers is a social enterprise whose aim is to address the need for sustainable and affordable alternative construction materials in Kenya and the Continent. Our vision is majorly aligned with four Sustainable Development Goals numbers 8,9,11 and 13. Our initial output are innovations derived from recycled plastics to produce paving blocks, paving tiles and manhole covers.
We collate waste plastics and process these using the latest cutting-edge technologies to mix the recycled plastic with sand to form a mixture which we mold into our various products.

Choose your pick:  4Ocean or the Ocean Cleanup’s interceptor or any of the many organizations worldwide that collect plastics in rivers and on beaches, before the plastic can get into the ocean. These are very important operations and they are looking for more people who want to work with them and/or operate their collection machines!
Ocean Cleanup’s Sun Glasses is another project that uses waste plastic.

RECYCLED PLASTIC SWIMWEAR
Keeping Plastic Out of Landfill And Our Oceans

Our swimwear is made from recycled plastic waste intercepted before headed for landfill and our oceans. We believe that up-cycling and recycling waste into products and tools that are useful, valuable and reusable could play a huge part in the clean-up and overall reduction of waste pollution going forward. Recycling may not save the planet, but when done in a considered way, it is one of many solutions we can utilise right now in the present. It not only helps reduce consumption of new raw materials, it also helps reduce energy usage, as well as reducing air and water pollution from landfills and marine waste.

Net from the Ocean BureoSkate Boards

Bureo recycles fishing nets by turning them into cool skateboards. Each skateboard needs 30 square feet of fishing nets. The boards are designed in collaboration with Carver Skateboards. Besides the eco-friendly material, the boards are constructed for a lifetime of riding. All skateboards are made in California.” The reverse king pinned Carver CX truck system allows the rider to pump the board like a surfboard, bridging the gap between surfing and skating.”
Bureo is working with industry leaders to incorporate NetPlus materials into their supply chains.

WharfWarp
Our stats as of 12/31/2019:
151,303 feet of rope has been woven. That’s over 28 miles of rope, weighing about 4,539 pounds!
It all began in 2016.  We’d gathered some old unwanted rope from a local wharf, created a few items and successfully sold them at a local craft show.  With much encouragement and enthusiasm from customers and other vendors we decided to make a go of it.  And so evolved WharfWarp.

Our workshop is equipped with self-made jigs for weaving, tools for cutting, joining and finishing rope, a pellet stove to warm us and lots of podcasts for amusement.

Update Liati Wote plastic recycling program March 2020

A year since we had been in Liati Wote, Ghana, and, although we have had many updates and pictures throughout the year, it was great to see, with our own eyes, all the things that have been done. Many waste bins in the village and along the trails to Mount Afadjato and the Tagbo Falls, real nice mural paintings and a room full with stored plastic that has been picked in the village and on the trails.
Water sachets – The water sachets (and there are many of them in and around Liati Wote) can be cleaned and cut open to obtain sheets of plastic. With a sewing machine the plastic sheets can be sewed together to be transformed into products. Or, using an iron, they can be melted together to get thicker, stronger plastic sheets that, again, can be used to make products.
We have invested in a sewing machine (with accessories) and in an iron and Gideon Dodea has, with the help of a Dutch volunteer, learned to use the sewing machine. In only three days, he has made a shopping bag, a complicated toiletries bag and a sun cap. In the coming months he will develop his skills and teach these skills to inhabitants that are interested in the process of creating things out of plastic. The Sanitation Committee is involved in selecting the first seamstresses and tailors who are interested and would like to learn some of these skills. The final goal is selling the products to generate income for the project. check this:

Waste Plastic BUSINESSES

Remember to Close-the-Loop

in Precious Plastic’s chapter: Designing for Recycled Plastic
You are reminded that, even here, we need to think about what customers do after they are finished using your product.

Make it circular
What does being “circular” mean?
Circularity is considering the entire life cycle of a product in the very beginning. It means designing products that are made up of recyclable materials and/or that can be clearly recycled (including disassembly and separation of materials). It means designing out waste and considering all materials to be sourced from or sent to other uses. …
… where are the materials sourced from? what are the byproducts of production? what is the realistic lifespan of this new product? How can it be recycled, disassembled or reused? If you’re interested in this topic, Cradle to Cradle is an excellent [source for this information].

We have a long way to go to rid the world of all the non-biogradable plastic in the world. It will take years! But, bottom-line, our goal is to replace it all with something like plastic that closes the loop. “Something that does what nature does.
Circular: Harvest, Make, Harvest again unless it really decomposes!

That “something” is coming sooner than we think….

Newlight Technologies, Inc.

Every day, microorganisms in the ocean eat methane and carbon dioxide as food, and turn it into a biomaterial called PHB. Since it is meltable, PHB can be used as a replacement for plastic, fiber, and even leather.

So, our founding goal was simple: mimic this natural process on land. Our aim: produce:
a cost-effective,
high-performance,
ocean-degradable,
carbon-negative biomaterial.

After 10 years of research,  we were able to do that.
As a result, we can melt AirCarbon and cool it into everything from fiber and sheet to solid parts, and use it to replace things like synthetic plastic.

Thanks, nature.
Because AirCarbon is PHB and PHB is natural, nature knows what to do with it, and consumes it as food for regrowth, like a leaf falling in the forest. With AirCarbon, we have the opportunity to recycle the same way nature recycles: anaerobically digesting it into greenhouse gas, and using that gas to make new AirCarbon.

It is the kind of future we are working to make happen, and a future that AirCarbon enables.

We humans are going to learn how to
harmonize with planet Earth!
